Cabot® Creamery Earns Honors At 2015 US Championship Cheese Contest


11 Cabot Products Post Strong Showings in Wisconsin

Cabot, Vt. (March 26, 2015) – The results of the 2015 United States Championship Cheese Contest have been announced, and Cabot Creamery Cooperative has added another chapter to its history of award-winning finishes at major dairy competitions. The New England and upstate New York farm-family owned dairy cooperative posted 13 top-five finishes, including two 1st place ribbons and two 2nd place ribbons.

This year’s first place awards were given to two consumer favorites: Sharp Light Cheddar and Cabot Hot Buffalo Wing Cheddar. Cabot Sharp Light Cheddar, also known as the “Best Light Cheese in the U.S.,” features all the flavor and only half the fat of traditional sharp cheddar, along with a smooth, firm texture and a creamy, buttery flavor. Cabot Hot Buffalo Wing Cheddar, comes from the cooperative’s hand-rubbed line, and pairs a cool, creamy cheddar with a lively, spicy buffalo wing flavor.

Cabot Vermont Sharp Cheddar and Cabot Private Stock Cheddar, two classic Cabot cheddars, earned second place ribbons this year. Cabot Vermont Sharp Cheddar, a longtime award winner, is a traditional cheddar with the perfect amount of sharpness for every member of the family to enjoy. Cabot Private Stock Cheddar, sold in specialty-waxed bricks, is a rich, complex cheddar that is aged for a minimum of 16 months.

A third place ribbon was awarded to Cabot Hand-Rubbed Everything Bagel Cheddar. Cabot picked up fourth and fifth place awards for perennial favorites from other contests, including Monterey Jack, Mild Cheddar, Medium Vermont Cheddar, Garlic & Herb Cheddar, Hand-Rubbed Tuscan Cheddar and the versatile and delicious Greek-Style Lowfat Yogurt.

Interestingly, Hot Buffalo Wing Cheddar, Everything Bagel Cheddar and Tuscan Cheddar are all cut from Cabot 640 cheddar, which is produced at the Middlebury plant. Cabot’s flavored cheeses had an excellent showing, with five top-10 finishes in what are considered hotly-contested, competitive and trendy categories.

The 2015 United States Championship Cheese Contest, now in its 34th year, was held in Madison, Wisconsin and saw a record 1,885 entries from 28 states. The contest, held March 17-19, was hosted by the Wisconsin Cheese Makers Association, who invited 32 dairy experts from 18 states to judge thousands of entries in 90 cheese, butter and yogurt classes.
